Olympic Softball Gold Medal goes to the US
The Gold Medal game of Olympic Softball was played in Athens, Greece, August 23, 2004. The game featured the United States vs. Australia.
The Americans struck gold for their 3rd Gold medal in the 3 Olympics that have had softball. They defeated Australia 5 - 1.
Australia had defeated Japan 3 - 0 the day before, giving Australia the Silver Medal and Japan the Bronze.
The 8 teams competing in Athens were the United States, Australia (who were two-time Olympic bronze medallists before this Olympics), Canada, 1996 Olympic Softball silver medallist China, Chinese Taipei, Greece, Italy, and 2000 Olympic Softball silver medallist Japan.
This year the US dominated in a way that not been seen in the past, outscoring their opponents 51 - 1.
