Hitting Tips

Put a Sock in it!

Have you ever practiced hitting with a rolled up sock? If not, why not?

Do you think you always have to hit a ball?

Isn't the goal of practicing to practice perfect swings, over and over again? If that's true, it doesn't matter what you swing at. It could be a ball, a rolled up sock (as Tony Gwynn used to do with his brothers), bottle caps (as Willie Mays used to do), or even the petals off of flowers (that is, until your mom kills you).

Any time you take a perfect swing, it is one more time your brain memorizes the movements for your muscles (muscle memory), so that in a game situation your brain has a better chance of remembering this new perfect swing and executing it.

By practicing with these other objects it eliminates the excuse that you couldn't practice because you didn't have the right equipment or the ball would travel too far or someone would be afraid of catching the ball that was hit too hard.
